For the purpose of having an international education and improving the students’ English level, Huijia College has set up relationships with many foreign educational institutions and established a number of overseas studying institutions, the Overseas studying center in Los Angeles, U.S.A. is one of them.

Huijia’s primary school department has implemented a “5+1”system, i.e. to finish the six-year course of primary school in five years, and have intensive English study in the sixth one of the primary school years. The practice is that part of the sixth graders will go to study in the United States, and the arrangement for their life and studies will be done by the overseas studying center in Los Angeles.

The overseas studying center in Los Angeles has four sections, including foreign language teaching section, Chinese language teaching section, living section and section of Students’ Union, which are directly led by Mr. Wang Zhize, Chairman of the board, and his wife Ms. Yang Guiqin. The foreign language teaching section is formed with the teachers from Oxford School of the United States; The Chinese language teaching section and the living section are formed with the teachers sent by Beijing Huijia college, who are diligent at their work. The students stay at the apartment houses, and they are under the management of their accompanied teachers. In the daytime, the students study the English courses at the American school, and in the evening they have the homeland primary school lessons for six graders given by the Chinese teachers of Huijia College. The cooperation between the teachers of the overseas studying center and the teachers of Oxford School is going on smoothly. Since its establishment in 1995, the overseas studying center has already had three groups of students studying at the Oxford School. The school puts emphasis on the teaching of ESL. The method of ESL teaching is suitable for the students who are not native English speakers. Thus the teaching method is the most effective one for Huijia students who take an English course of only ten months.

So far there have been six groups of primary school students going to stedy in the United States, with a total number of 166. The seventh group of students to go to the United States is under organization. After ten months studying in the United States, all the students will make rapid progress in their English and in the ways to get along with people as well. There are excellent students in every group, for example, the students Ding ke, Helena Hou, Ma Ping,Qiu Biqing, Wang Chenxiao, etc. who were repeatedly awarded by the American school.

Every year during the course, the Oxford School and the overseas studying center organized cultural exchange activities for the students to have more understanding of American culture. For example, The students are given opportunities to visit American schools, have conversations with American students, attend classes with American students, make contact through letters or e-mail, etc. Through such activities the students have practiced and greatly improved their English level. The fifth group of 43 students and five accompanied teachers ever visited Toll Middle School, a big school in Los Angles, which has more than 2000 students. This is the first time for the school to receive such a large group of foreign visitors and all the teachers and students gave a warm welcome to the Chinese guests. Their visiting activities at the schools were reported by the local news media, including Los Angeles Times, the largest newspaper in the local area.

In addition, There are always other kind of activities, such as calling on American families, visiting museums, going to libraries, seeing films, and visiting parks and zoos, etc. On holidays the overseas studying center frequently organizes the students to go to have a tour to Hawaii, San Francisco, Saint Diego, Disney, etc. to see and appreciate the scenery of the United States and understand its culture and customs.
